Shanghai has rolled out one of its most attractive policies yet for foreign professionals.
The Lin-gang Special Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone has officially released its 2026 list of 2,415 approved employers eligible to sponsor workresidence permits of up to five years for foreign talent.
The policy, which took effect immediately, creates a streamlined pathway from temporary residence to permanent residency for eligible foreign employees.
Here's what it means:
✅ Up to 5-year work residence permits –
Foreign professionals hired by companies on the approved list can apply for work residence permits valid for up to five years. Employers no longer need to apply for separate qualification approvals for each individual hire, significantly simplifying the process.
✅ Apply for a Chinese "green card" after 3 years
Foreign employees who have worked in the Lin-gang Special Area for three years may apply for permanent residence in China under the area's preferential policies. Their spouses and unmarried children under 18 can apply together.
✅ China's largest residency facilitation program–
Covering 2,415 employers, this is the country's largest list-based residence permit scheme for foreign talent, replacing case-by-case approvals with a streamlined employer whitelist.
The new policy is designed to attract more international professionals to Shanghai by making it easier to live, work and build a long-term future in one of China's fastest-growing innovation hubs.
